The Health Institute Istria in Pula, Croatia, is setting new standards in technology and safety. With the new extension to the existing building, the laboratory and microbiology area has been expanded. It has been equipped with modern research and examination technology.

Microbiological tests in the fields of bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology require daily work with Bunsen or Teclub burners. These in turn are operated via methane gas (natural gas).

Permanent work with CH4 needs strict Methane gas monitoring.  This must take place above all in the premises where people and equipment need to be protected from hazardous gases.

In addition, according to the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (GefStoffV) and the Laboratory Directive, relevant safety measures are required when handling various hazardous substances in laboratories and medical facilities.

Fixed gas warning systems from MSR-Electronic are particularly flexible in use here.

They can be tailored to all requirements, e.g.:

  • individual sensors with connection to existing BMS systems
  • complex stand-alone gas warning systems for large-scale laboratories with different areas

The gas detection system from MSR-Electronic includes freely configurable alarm thresholds for compliance with MAC values as well as various interfaces (Modbus, BACnet, analog output) for connection to existing BMS. By means of a modular design, the system is adapted to your requirements.

Digital exchangeable sensor system from MSR-Electronic for safe Methane gas monitoring

In the Istrian Health Institute, the exchangeable sensor system is used for coninuos Methane gas monitoring of the ambient air.

The system contains:

  • digitalised measured value processing
  • temperature compensation
  • self-monitoring for continuous
SB2 with sensor

It consists of the components sensor board with housing (type SB2) and sensor head (type SC2). The digital gas sensors (type SC2) are used to detect CH4.

The sensor head has an independent μController that evaluates and stores all relevant measured values and data of the sensor element. This data the sensor head transfers to the sensor board via the internal local bus.

Up to 3 sensor heads for different gases can be connected to the sensor board.

The sensor head can be mounted directly on:

  • the basic sensor board (type SB2)
  • in a distance on a remote sensor board (RB2)

Via the RS-485 fieldbus interface, the basic sensor board communicates with the GC-06 Gas-Controller – the heart of the fixed gas detection system.

In the event of a gas leakage in the Istria Health Institute, the 1st alarm threshold (20 % LEL) switches the gas supply off via the solenoid valve. Then it warns the staff using a light signal.

If the gas concentration reaches the 2nd alarm threshold (40 % LEL), an acoustic alarm is switched on via a horn and flashing light combination.

Thus the evacuation of the staff is initiated as well as the alarm to the emergency services (fire brigade) is forwarded.

The complete installation of the Methane gas monitoring system was carried out directly on site by the certified MSR partner Aurel d.o.o from Zagreb.

MSR-Electronic is a manufacturer of fixed gas warning systems with decades of experience in the field of gas measurement technology.  The international company with headquarters in Germany has a wide range of methods for the detection of toxic, combustible gases and oxygen. On this basis MSR-Electronic develops individual gas sensors, controllers and warning devices for many applications, such as  parking garages, tunnelspetrochemical industry  or  shipping. The products meet more than the  general standards and regulations  and can therefore guarantee the safety of the plantIf you have any questions please send us an email or give us a call.
