Taking into account the ATEX directive, gas detectors that comply with the EN 60079-29-1 standard protect against explosion hazards caused by combustible gases and vapours in these areas.

Hydrogen for example is a very reactive gas. For this reason, constant monitoring by a gas warning system is mandatory.

Leaks can occur at any time during research work, on test benches and during the production of the gas. This can cause catastrophic damage in the event of ignition.

 

Requirements for safety of plants and people

 

The requirements for gas sensors for the ATEX area for the measurement of combustible gases and vapours include general requirements such as construction and fault indications.

In addition, the following are also tested:

  • Calibration curve
  • drift and vibration behaviour
  • influence of humidity
  • flow rate
  • air pressure

The product requirements placed on ATEX gas sensors for measuring O2 are described in the EN 50104 Standard. This European Standard considers different types of application for gas detectors.

One possible application is, for example, the monitoring of oxygen concentration with regard to deviations from the normal atmospheric value in case of oxygen deficiency or excess.

Furthermore, applications are considered in which gas detectors are to monitor low oxygen limit values, e.g. during inerting.

EN 50271 specifies minimum requirements for electrical equipment which uses software and/or digital technology for the detection and measurement of combustible and toxic gases as well as oxygen.
